Symbolic Throne of Saint Peter by bajamcmillans Behind the main alter In St. Peter’s Basilica, Vatican City. This is an enormous reliquary enclosing the wooden chair accepted as St. Peter’s. Behind and above the throne is the golden mass of heavenly beings surrounding the oval window of light with the dove that represents the Holy Spirit. Of marble, bronze, white and golden stucco. Design and major sculptures by Gian Lorenzo Bernini, 1657-66. In this photo, the throne is framed by the columns of the Baldachin over the Tomb of St. Peter. The Baldachin is also the work of Bernini.
